Do you have a negative identity?

Maybe you see yourself as a loser, always failing, unable to succeed.

Maybe you feel you're a procrastinator, never able to make a decision.

Perhaps you're a perfectionist, never able to rest till it's "just right".

Our identity is the very core of our being.

What we believe we are is often what we become. And once we have "set" our identities, they can be very hard to change.

In our stressful, anxious world, it's no surprise people end up with unhelpful, damaging, identities.

Perhaps you see yourself as a "loser", never good enough as everything and everyone encourages you to compare your body to supermodels, or your bank account to a billionaire's. You can't ever win, you can never be good enough and so you feel like you have failed, like you have lose at the game of life. That childish taunt of "loser" echoes round your head until it feels that it's all you'll ever be.

Or maybe you feel unable to ever make a decision, that you are a "procrastinator". Modern life confronts us with a myriad of choices every day, and it can be hard to make a decision, to know what to do for the best. The worry of "getting it wrong" can become overwhelming until it's impossible to decide what to do. But life doesn't stop, and the decisions just become more and more urgent until it's all so overwhelming that you no longer know what to do.

You could be a "perfectionist", an identity that is given both praise and scorn. All you want is things to be right, to be just perfect, but life keeps messing up your plans: people do things wrong, things don't work out, you don't get the job, the partner isn't perfect after all, accidents happen. And your perfect plans fall apart, leaving you with nothing but fear, anger and a crushing sense of failure and disappointment.

Many people try to change their identities themselves. but find that it's simply too difficult. Some inner voice keeps telling them there's no point trying, and no matter how strong their determination, they end up failing eventually. Each failure makes it harder to try again until they simply don't bother, and give up.

If this is you, it's not your fault. Our world does not make change easy, and you have struggled by yourself for a long time; it's no wonder you are tired. But there is hope.

Take a moment to imagine what it would be like to have a positive identity. To know, without doubt, that you were strong, confident and capable. To accept yourself as enough, and to understand that even when life presents you with challenges, you can persevere.

How wonderful would your life be? What would you do first?
